SCE Scuttles Feed-in Tariff Bill

May 1st, 2009 Posted by Larry Hogue in renewable energy

Frequent readers of DesertBlog will know that we’re big fans of “building-integrated” photovoltaic solar power, because this form of solar energy requires no desert habitat destruction and no money- and energy-wasting transmission lines. And we’ve had good things to say about Southern California Edison, whose efforts to install solar panels on commercial buildings in Riverside and San Bernardino counties has been a big boost for the PV solar industry and for total PV installations in the state.

Now, however, news comes that SCE has killed California’s best chance at getting a real Feed-in Tariff. Seems they don’t want too much of a good thing, or at least they don’t want to share it with the rest of California.

You can read more about SCE’s actions on my post on the newly launched community environmental journalism site, “The Clade,” created and hosted by Chris Clarke. While you’re there, check out Chris’s introduction to the site, and the wealth of posts on a variety of great nature and environmental topics by the site’s contributors. Since it’s a community blog, you can also sign up to contribute your own stories.

NYT had an article today regarding Germany’s investment in California’s PV solar plant in Oregon:
“Germany,SolarWorld’s home, is at the same latitude as southern Alaska, often has cloudy skies and is a much smaller country than the United States. Yet the number of installed solar panels in Germany is more than three times the amount in America.”

However no mention of how feed in tarrifs played a huge role in the amount of PV installed in Germany. Nor was a connection made regarding the smaller size of Germany and its cloud shrouded skies and how this is indicative that it is not necessary to locate solar installations in huge swaths of undisturbed desert lands.
