Support the California Desert and Mountain Heritage Act

June 8th, 2008 Posted by Larry Hogue in wilderness

UPDATE: The California Desert and Mountain Heritage Act passed the House yesterday morning! Congratulations to all involved. Please take a moment to thank Congresswoman Mary Bono-Mack using this form. The House also passed the Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park Wilderness Act.

This just in from Laurel Williams of the California Wilderness Coalition. Please write a letter supporting mountain and desert wilderness today! Congress could take up the bill as early as Monday June 9!

A momentous decision is about to take place in Congress. More than 190,000 acres of wilderness and 31 miles of wild and scenic rivers in Riverside County could be protected — forever. The California Desert and Mountain Heritage Act may be considered for a full House vote as early as next week!

But to ensure that H.R. 3682 passes, we need your help. We’ve teamed up with the folks at Friends of the River to write letters to our Representatives in Congress to ensure passage of this bill. Click here to submit a letter online.

Background
The California Desert and Mountain Heritage Act, introduced by Rep. Bono-Mack (R-Palm Springs), and co-sponsored by California Senators Boxer and Feinstein, would protect Riverside County’s wild public lands. Areas like the spectacular Joshua Tree National Park, Agua Tibia and San Jacinto wilderness areas, Beauty Mountain, Cahuilla Mountain, and South Fork San Jacinto-all known the world over for their unique beauty. The only way to ensure their survival for future generations is by working through Congress for their protection.

Designating the region’s crown jewels as wilderness and wild and scenic rivers will keep these beautiful steep mountains, winding canyons, and rugged desert landscapes just as they are today. These areas will be preserved for residents and visitors to enjoy hiking, camping, rock climbing, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, or just as a view they drive past.

The California Desert and Mountain Heritage Act is the culmination of more than a decade of hard work by a locally-based coalition of individuals, organizations, and businesses working together to protect some of Riverside County’s most important wild lands and rivers.

Your letter to your Representative in Congress will make a big difference in ensuring that this important bill passes the House of Representatives. Please send your letter today! Click here to submit a letter online.
