Announcing DesertBlog
The Desert Protective Council is proud to announce the launch of DesertBlog, a new tool for communicating with our members and the public. Available at www.dpcinc.org/blog, the blog will allow you to get timely updates on desert news, events, and conservation issues, as well as occasional musings on the desert landscape, photos, thoughts on desert conservation policy, the value of desert wilderness, and more. You can join the conversation by registering as a DesertBlog user and posting your comments.
The best way to follow DesertBlog is to sign up for a “Real Simple Subscription” (RSS). Click on the RSS “Subscribe in a reader” button in the blog’s right-hand column, and then choose from Google, Yahoo, and more. (At e-Paisano’s “press-time,” we are still working out bugs with other subscription methods, including Outlook 2007, and other e-mail options.)

REMINDER: April 5 Desert Protection Summit
Don’t forget to join us at this important conference, co-sponsored by DPC, on the impacts of off-road vehicles and solutions to this problem. Desert Protection Summit offers you a chance to learn more about the costs and environmental effects of off-road vehicles, and to help find solutions to protect private lands, public lands and sacred sites from off-road vehicle abuse.
The conference will be held in the town of Joshua Tree on Saturday, April 5, with Dr. Howard Wilshire, respected geologist, desert advocate and author of The Environmental Effects of Off-Road Vehicles, as the keynote speaker.
The all-day event is free and open to the public, though donations will be accepted. Topics include: impacts on sacred sites, private property and protected areas; panel discussions on using the law; conservation efforts; addressing harassment and intimidation; challenges with law enforcement; and grant funding.
See DPC’s
website for complete details. We hope to see you there! |

Peninsular Bighorn Sheep Critical Habitat Reduction
The San Diego
Union-Tribune had a good article by Mike Lee on the US Fish & Wildlife Service’s proposal to shrink critical habitat for the peninsular bighorn.
While the article featured a quote from USF&WS stating that some of the habitat to be excluded consists of high-elevation, forested areas not known for use by bighorn sheep, what they left out is that the revised habitat also excludes low-elevation desert washes, which do provide important summer forage for bighorn.
We’re encouraged to see that the service is planning to hold public hearings, and we’ll let you know as soon as dates are announced. |
